Starting a new gig. Be prepared!
Jun 20, 2021
Congratulations on landing your first gig! Exciting times ahead. Now let's get prepared, understand what to expect on your first day and importantly, know your rights as an employee.
Below are the top tips for starting a new job.
Make a good first impression
It's ok to have the first day jitters. Your first day can be very daunting but remember that nerves are a natural feeling. As the first day will mainly train and induct you into the business and role, you must arrive on time. Review transport schedules and travel routes to allow plenty of time. You want to arrive at least 15 minutes before your shift starts.
It's also important to read any instructions or pre-reading your employer has provided before you start. You may also need to fill in paperwork, so check out the First Day Checklist provided. Make sure you remember the name of your contact and ask for them when you arrive.
Have a positive attitude
Try to set your nerves aside and start your new job with a positive attitude. As the first few shifts will be about learning, make sure you are attentive by listening and don’t be afraid to ask questions. There is nothing wrong with being prepared and writing down notes if that helps you remember processes or tasks. It shows that you are taking the role seriously and trying to get up to speed quickly. After your first shift, give your trainer or boss some positive feedback and reinforce your enthusiasm for the role. It’s always good to get feedback from your trainer on how you performed.
Find a buddy
Remember, people you are working with had a 'first day on the job' too. Co-workers will know how you are feeling and should have a level of empathy and willingness to show you the ropes. It's ok to let people know you have just started to set expectations of your pace and knowledge. If you are working in a specific area, it's good to find a buddy you feel comfortable with to ask further questions.
Be proactive
There is no better way of learning than getting stuck in and having a go. Being proactive is a great attribute that shows your boss your eagerness to learn and work during your shift. If it's quieter or there's downtime, make sure you ask what you could do to help. Could you be cleaning or stacking shelves, putting things away? Plus, staying busy makes the time go quicker!
Enjoy yourself
It's really exciting starting your first job! You will be learning new skills, meeting new people, and working through various work situations. Try and keep a positive frame of mind, and don't get overwhelmed. Everything will click into place over time. Customers and staff will feel a positive vibe from you when you are enjoying yourself.
So be prepared for your first day. Here is a First Day Checklist to get yourself prepared. Good luck!
