How is Coronavirus spread?
Covid-19, like the flu can be spread from person to person. When a person who has the virus coughs, sneezes or talks they may spread droplets containing the vurus a short distance which quickly settle on surrounding surfaces. You may get infected by the virus if you touch those surfaces or objects and then touch your mouth, nose or eyes.
What can you do to stop it spreading?
- Cough or sneeze into your elbow or by covering your mouth or nose with tissues
- Put used tissues in the bin or a bag immediately
- Wash your hands with soap and water often (for at least 20 seconds)
- Try not to touch your eyes, nose or mouth if your hands are not clean
- Avoid personal contact such as kissing, or sharing cups or food with people who are sick
- Clean and disinfect frequently touched surfaces and objects
- Stay at home if you feel unwell and call Healthline 0800 358 5453
Symptoms of Coronavirus
- A cough
- A high temperature (at least 38 degrees)
- Shortness of breath
These symptoms do not necessarily mean you have Coronavirus as the symptoms are similar to other illnesses that are much more common such as the cold or flu. However, if you are feeling unsure call Healthline.
What support is available?
In emergencies, Work and Income can help you with costs if you don't have any other way of paying. ynot need to be on a benefit to be eligible and even if you don’t think you qualify, call them on 0800 559 009 to check your eligibility. There may be other options available and Work and Income can point you in the right direction.
In emergencies, Work and Income can help with:
- Loss of livelihood (where you can’t work and have lost your income)
- Food, clothing and bedding (immediate needs up to a maximum amount)
- Accommodation costs if you have to move.
