Hello World Gin Day!
Jun 01, 2023
World Gin Day is an annual celebration of all things gin, taking place on the second Saturday of June each year and this year it lands on June 10th. Gin is a distilled spirit that gets its predominant flavour from juniper berries. It has been enjoyed for centuries and has played a significant role in the history of cocktails. Today, gin is one of the most popular spirits in the world, with a wide variety of styles and flavours available to suit any palate.
World Gin Day is an opportunity to showcase gin to your customers, we wanted to share a few ideas for how you could go about doing this. One options would be to create a special gin cocktail menu for your customers. This could include classic gin cocktails, such as the Martini, Negroni or Clover Club combined with own creations. For a simpler option you could showcase a collection of Gin and Tonic’s pairing a variety of Gin’s with different Tonics and garnishes. Another fun could be to offer a gin tasting event. This could involve inviting customers to sample different gins, along with some tasting notes and information on the history and production of each gin. You could also provide some food pairings that complement the flavours of the gins. Whichever approach you take you want to offer a variety of gins that showcase the different flavour profiles on offer, most importantly be creative and have fun!
The two key Gin categories that are most common and popular are London Dry Gin and Distilled Gin.
London Dry Gin is one of the classic categories. It originated in London but now is defined by its production methods rather than where it’s made. London Dry must be distilled with neutral grain spirit, juniper and botanicals to at least 70% ABV and cannot have anything added other than water after distillation.
A fun fact is that the term “dry” was added back in the 1700’s when the category was created, to differentiate itself from the sweetened low-quality Gin widely available through London at the time. London Dry will act as the ideal base for most classic Gin cocktails. Gordons and Tanqueray are great examples of this style.
Distilled Gin has a broader definition and has really allowed makers to push the boundaries of what Gin can be (sometimes raising the eyebrows of the purists in the process!). As the name suggests it is made by distilling Neutral Grain Spirit with juniper and other botanicals, this time with no minimum alcoholic strength required after distillation. Furthermore, other flavours and colours can be added after the distillation process has been completed. This category has enabled distilleries to open and flourish around the world introducing their local botanicals in the process. Tanqueray No. TEN, Aviation and Tanqueray Royale are some good examples of this.

Food pairing:
Tanqueray No TEN can be served with a variety of cuisines thanks to its citrus heart. It combines well with Mexican and South East Asian cuisines. You can also try it with fresh Australian seafood served either grilled or raw. Think fish tacos, ceviche, sashimi or papaya salad.
Tanqueray Blackcurrant Royale is a bright, fragrant sweeter style of gin that pairs well with daytime food and predinner canapes and starters. It’s also delicious with desserts and spice driven foods. We suggest trying it with soft cheese, a grape and bocconcini salad or a tomato tart. For something sweeter try it with Tiramisu!
Aviation Gin is complimented with citrus, spice and herbaceous foods which accentuate and compliment the floral notes of the gin. Try it with lighter seafoods such as scallops or mussels or with a pork Bahn Mi. If you’ve already had your mains try it with cinnamon scrolls or citrus cakes.
