Celebrating Women in Hospitality: Jeannie Tran, Manager

In celebration of International Women's Day, the spotlight shines on the inspiring journey of women making remarkable strides in the hospitality industry. One standout story of empowerment and progress comes from Jeannie Tran, whose path in hospitality highlights the potential and empowerment of women in this dynamic field against the vibrant backdrop of New Zealand's hospitality scene.

About You

Tell us a bit about yourself – how did you get into hospitality?

I have accumulated six years of experience in the hospitality industry. In 2018,  immediately after completing high school in Vietnam, I made my way to Auckland, New  Zealand, to enrol in a three-year Hospitality Management program at PBRS  (Professional Business and Restaurant School). Despite being a student, my eagerness to gain practical experience led me to embark on my hospitality career with the help of  Barcats. I started as a front-of-house staff in a downtown Bowling, Bar, and Restaurant establishment and, over time, earned promotions to take on various management roles.
This initial job not only deepened my understanding of the industry but also provided invaluable support for my studies at school.

How did you find yourself in your current role?

After gaining one year of experience in a café environment, I realized that a restaurant or bar setting would be more aligned with my preferences and skills.  Consequently, I actively sought opportunities within this industry and came across a job posting for the position of Restaurant Manager at Nuuna's. Intrigued by the prospect, I  engaged in a meaningful conversation with the business owner.
During our discussion, I discovered numerous commonalities in our approaches to work and business operations. These shared values and perspectives resonated with me,  ultimately influencing my decision to accept the job offer. As of September 2023, I am excited to bring my expertise and enthusiasm to the role of Restaurant Manager at  Nuuna's.

About Your Venue

Nuuna, Auckland

What do you love most about working in your venue?

I am deeply impressed by the owner's visionary approach and exceptional talents in steering the operations of this business. I hold great admiration for the owner's achievements and am eager to learn from their wealth of experience. The opportunity to work closely with someone of such calibre aligns with my aspirations for professional growth.
Moreover, my background is particularly rich in Asian fusion cuisine, making me well-equipped to contribute significantly to the restaurant's culinary endeavours. I am confident that my expertise in this area will not only complement the establishment's offerings but also allow me to thrive and contribute meaningfully to the vibrant culinary landscape that Nuuna's aims to create. I am excited about the prospect of applying my skills in such a dynamic and promising environment.

What skills have you developed since working in this role?

I have been provided with a comprehensive and in-depth understanding of running a business, covering various facets such as accounting, HR management, payroll, and marketing. The owner has graciously entrusted me with the authority to oversee and  learn these critical aspects, allowing me to gain valuable insights into the holistic
management of the establishment.
The owner's commitment to my professional development is evident in their approachability and willingness to offer guidance whenever needed. I appreciate the  open communication and collaborative atmosphere, as it fosters an environment where
no question is deemed silly or insignificant. This supportive dynamic ensures that I have ample opportunities to learn and refine my skills, making my experience at Nuuna's not only professionally enriching but also personally rewarding. I am confident that the mentorship I receive will contribute significantly to my growth in the role and beyond.

What advice would you give to someone considering a career in hospitality with Epic Dining Ltd?

My advice to anyone aspiring to enter this industry is simple: prioritize having fun. In the dynamic world of Hospitality, enjoyment is paramount. The key to navigating challenges lies in perseverance—just keep going and confront difficulties head-on. Embracing a work philosophy that rejects the notion of mistakes or failures, viewing them instead as valuable lessons, has been instrumental in shaping my approach.
From my perspective, every obstacle presents an opportunity for growth. As you encounter challenges, use them as stepping stones to learn and enhance your skill set.  By adopting this mindset, you not only overcome hurdles more effectively but also find greater enjoyment in your work. In essence, transforming setbacks into opportunities for self-improvement allows you to derive more satisfaction from your job. So, my advice is to approach each experience as a chance to learn and upgrade yourself, ensuring that the journey in this industry is not only successful but also fulfilling.

About The Industry

What changes in the hospo environment/culture have you noticed over time?

Throughout my experience in the hospitality industry, I've observed several notable changes in the environment and culture. One prominent shift is the increasing emphasis on technology integration. The adoption of digital platforms for reservations,  ordering, and customer engagement has become more widespread, streamlining operations and enhancing the overall guest experience.
Another significant change is the growing focus on sustainability and ethical practices.  There is a heightened awareness of environmental impact, leading many establishments to implement eco-friendly initiatives, such as sourcing local and organic ingredients,  reducing waste, and adopting energy-efficient practices. This reflects a broader societal shift towards conscious consumption, and it's encouraging to see the industry aligning with these values.
Furthermore, the hospitality culture has evolved to prioritize diversity and inclusivity.  There is a greater recognition of the importance of fostering a welcoming and inclusive atmosphere for both staff and patrons. This shift reflects a more profound understanding of the diverse backgrounds and preferences of guests, as well as the value of a diverse workforce in providing a well-rounded and culturally sensitive experience.
Lastly, the current global circumstances have accelerated changes in the hospitality sector, with an increased emphasis on hygiene and safety. The implementation of stringent health protocols has become a standard practice, and there is a heightened awareness of the importance of maintaining a clean and secure environment for both employees and guests.
Overall, these changes collectively contribute to a more dynamic and forward-thinking hospitality industry, adapting to the evolving needs and expectations of patrons while embracing positive societal trends.

What do you love most about working in hospitality?

One of the aspects I cherish most about working in the hospitality industry is the opportunity to forge connections and build friendships. Interacting with a diverse array of people and being able to contribute to their happiness through exceptional customer service brings me immense joy. Over the years in this field, I have accumulated a wealth of experiences that extend beyond merely serving guests.
My journey has been a rich tapestry of fun moments and valuable lessons, not only about the intricacies of operating a business but also in terms of effectively managing people. It's the dynamic nature of the industry that constantly presents new challenges and learning opportunities.
What I find particularly gratifying is the role I've assumed as a mentor to others in their career development and personal growth. Guiding someone through their professional journey and witnessing their improvement is an incredibly rewarding experience. The sense of gratitude and pride that comes from being a mentor is unparalleled, underscoring the meaningful connections and positive impact that can be forged within the hospitality industry.
