Use Tanqueray Royale to Celebrate World Gin Day
Jun 01, 2022
Gin has been going through something of a renaissance over the past decade or so, and for good reason. It’s ability to be tweaked to represent the creativity of the distillery and act as a champion of the local flavours and ingredients cannot be replicated in any of the other spirits categories.
Let’s start off by making sure that we’re all on the same page. Gin is a spirit with the predominant flavour of Juniper. It’s made by taking a strong flavourless base spirit (a 96% flavourless alcohol known as Highly Rectified Spirit or Neutral Grain Spirit) adding the flavour of Juniper and other herbs and botanicals, usually through a pot still. If you want to dig in and read more about Gin and how it’s made, click here.
There are a couple of key categories of Gin that are worth knowing:
London Dry Gin is one of the classic categories. It originated in London but now is defined by its production methods rather than where it’s made. London Dry must be distilled with neutral grain spirit, juniper and botanicals to at least 70% and cannot have anything added other than water after distillation. A fun fact is that the term “dry” was added back in the 1700’s when the category was created, to differentiate itself from the sweetened low quality Gin widely available through London at the time. London Dry will act as the ideal base for most classic Gin cocktails.
Distilled Gin has a broader definition and has really allowed makers to push the boundaries of what Gin can be (sometimes raising the eyebrows of the purists in the process!). As the name suggests it is made by distilling Highly Rectified Spirit with juniper and other botanicals, this time with no minimum alcoholic strength required after distillation. Furthermore, other flavours and colours can be added after the distillation process has been completed. This category has enabled distilleries to open and flourish around the world introducing their local botanicals in the process.

Tanqueray Blackcurrant Royale is a bright, fragrant sweeter style of gin that pairs well with daytime food and predinner canapes and starters. It’s also delicious with desserts and spice driven foods. We suggest trying it with soft cheese, a grape and bocconcini salad or a tomato tart. For something sweeter try it with Tiramisu!
